Putting innovation to work - Where to, U.S.?

In the last few years, repeated calls have gone out for action on challenges facing the life sciences in the U.S. Yet, little or no action has been taken. The United States' ranking in technological readiness, business sophistication, and market efficiency is slipping. Federal agencies supporting the life sciences are not well coordinated. Funding for the America COMPETES Act has stalled in Congress despite bipartisan support and that of the President as well. What is wrong with this picture? And what can the life sciences community do to change or to influence it?

Optimizing Partnerships and Strategic Alliances

The impact of strategic alliances on shaping the pharmaceutical industry is unprecedented, and the trend is here to stay. How is large pharma going about identifying value in the startup arena, and what steps can early stage companies take to exploit large pharma’s quest for new technologies and products? This panel will include perspectives from large pharma partnering representatives who will highlight their unique approaches to strategic alliances and discuss case studies of deals involving small biotech and pharma. The panel will enable more informed decisions with respect to identifying synergies, approaching large pharma and structuring successful deals.

Globality: Beyond Globalization

The increasing connectivity of the world ensures the ease of transmission of diseases (even exotic, hitherto-unknown ones) for one thing, posing new challenges to regions around the globe, and new opportunities for the study and mining of data from populations across the globe. Big pharma has been a global presence for over a century, with individual markets being served from a large R&D establishment dispersed in now-mature markets. But, the life sciences represent a great new frontier for new discoveries to become innovative products and services. It is also rapidly throwing up new business models and opportunities. "Globality" indicates disruption, by a range of players, from generics manufacturers (whose motivations and capabilities go beyond the expiration of patents) to niche-oriented innovators focused on hitherto-neglected diseases and conditions that have global relevance not easily exploited by the individual market-orientation of today's incumbents. This panel will discuss some of these trends and issues, and how they are being pursued in both emerging and mature markets.

Early Stage Investing: VC, Angel, Corporate and Alternative Sources of Funding

The last year has been a challenging one for investors but there were many promising trends. VC-backed IPO's were up 33% while raising 60% more money than the previous year. VC and Angel funding was on the track to exceed 2006. M&A activity held its own. Funding continued shifting to later stage deals, however there is plenty of money for quality early stage companies. Also, Angel capital associations showed strong growth, individual Angels are returning to the fold, and VCs are making seed and early stage investments. There are more diverse sources of capital for seed and early stage companies. How to find them? How to best position to attract the right kind of capital?
